SpinRite 6.0 to be same price as 5.0
Folks, First, just so that no one is confused by reading this note, SpinRite v6.0 DOES NOT YET EXIST and is still several months away from existing. Anyone who purchases SpinRite v5.0 any time from the second half of this year on, will always be able to upgrade to SpinRite v6.0 for no charge. Since our online purchasing system went live at the beginning of July (exactly mid-year), any SpinRite v5.0 owners in the purchasing system will be entitled to upgrade to the next version of SpinRite online and without charge. SpinRite 6.0 freeze on level 1 scan of Intel SSD 520 series
I have a Intel SSD 520 series 180 GB that goes read-only running Linux. I was hoping to fix it using SR60. I have two times started a level 1 scan both of which causes the whole Dell Latitude to freeze up. Is there a way to overcome or get around this? Debug options, log files? -- DB. SpinRite on an Intel Mac?
Is it possible to run SpinRite on an Intel Mac? 'Barry E. Henley' <beh@mindspring.com> wrote in message news:fc4iuh$1d2o$1@news.grc.com... > Is it possible to run SpinRite on an Intel Mac? > > No, doesn't work... I've tried it.... Spinrite has been designed to interact with the system BIOS and the new Intel Mac's are now using EFI instead. I think you can run Spinrite within a virtual machine, but that probably wouldn't help you because it would only scan that chunk of the hard drive that is visible to the virtual machine...
Spinrite 6.0
I've been a fan of this site for at least two years. It wasn't until I came here that I found out how many security holes my computer used to have. I love and use the programs. I'm seriously interested in SR 6.0, since I can't use SR 5.0. This is my first foray into the newsgroups, however. Now I'm going to keep a closer track on the news here... Bad blocks that SpinRite 6.0 skips, maybe test case for 6.1
In the grc.spinrite forum, I posted a situation that I am having with a 2TB drive. I have 8 consecutive bad sectors (3,188,632,392 through 3,188,632,399 on a 2TB drive of 3,907,029,168 total sectors). My cloning software sees that these sectors are bad, but SpinRite does not. When I run SpinRite within a range to specifically target those bad sectors, for some reason SpinRite just keeps going to completion without starting up the dynastat process. Milton in the grc.spinrite forum suggested that it could be an issue of 'a drive of 4KB physical sectors masquerading as a...
Spinrite 6.0 Slowdown
I have a Compaq Presario Laptop, and the drive heats up after a while. So much so that I can't just leave the machine running to let Spinrite run to completion. It would be nice if Spinrite would optionally manage it's operations so that the drive could stay below the temperature threshhold. Even a manually entered 'Duty Cycle %' parameter that I could enter by hand would be great! Thanks! We need Spinrite 6.0!
Dear mr. Gibson & co. With this post I just want to add whatever incentive I can to further the development of the next generation of Spinrite. Over the years this piece of software has been an integral part of the system maintenance program in all corporations that I have worked for. The current version 5 is the best version ever - a unique and excellent product. Alas due to the latest development in hardware as well as software, it must now be considered too outdated to be of any practical use in a standard IT-installation anno 2003. For one, FAT is becomming very rare w...
SpinRite 6 speed vs. SpinRite 5 speed
My old PC is retired as a backup now, but I recently had to replace its HD, and decided to compare SpinRite 6's performance with what I had previously gotten with SpinRite 5. Platform: Intel AL440LX motherboard, 333GHz CPU, 320MB 66MHz RAM SpinRite 5 (level 5) / Western Digital 6.4GB 5400RPM HD / FAT32 --- 40 hours (0.16 GB/hour) SpinRite 6 (level 5) / Maxtor 80GB (76GB actual) 7200RPM HD / NTFS --- 6.5 hours (11.7 GB/hour) That's a pretty big speed increase. Some of its due to the faster HD, but I think it's mostly due to SpinRite 6. :) > Platform: Inte...
Thanks, SpinRite 6.0
I have owned a copy of SpinRite 6.0 and its earlier cousins since their birth. Fortunately, I haven't had to rescue any of my HDD's until yesterday. SR was just one of those 'must have' programs that I kept at hand. Yesterday, Win XP SP2 on boot would only blue screen. CHKDSK /f /r produced only more blue screens. Inserted my bootable SR 6.0 CD and after completing a level 2 procedure, I was back in business. I don't know how much I have spent on SR over the years, but what ever it was, yesterday made it all worthwhile. Thanks SpinRite. Bill Pomeroy &q...
Spinrite 6 fixes a Mac
-- My mother-in-law brought me a dead iMac G3 DV, with a 10 gig Quantum Fireball hard drive. The drive was clicking, grinding, and apparently stopping completely. She is a teacher, and keeps a lot of vital information on it. Knowing nothing about Macs, I removed the drive and placed it in my test box for obsolete equipment (Gateway PI 166 mhz, 128 meg RAM), and activated Spinrite. It took about 4 days of running the program (because of such an old slow computer) and when finished, Spinrite had recovered all the data. The Quantum went into the freezer overnight, wh...

Spinrite 6 on Mac Pro
I was able to boot Spinrite 6 on my Mac Pro at work. It booted up nicely, showed me the Spinrite 6 splash screen and dropped me into the menus. So far so good. Unfortunately, no keyboard control of any sort. I even tried a few PC keyboards (all USB of course) and still no luck. My question is this. Is this the first in a long line of hurdles to get Spinrite to work on an Intel based Mac or is this something simple i could fix with a different keyboard or a custom boot disk with the correct driver? pk Powerkey wrote: > Is this the first in a long line of hurdles to...
Message in Spinrite 6.0
I've tried to run V6 on a compressed drive and I get the message that the drive and the bios settings for it don't match. I think that's due to the drive being compressed. Am I looking at this correctly and will I have issues if I let SR loose to do a full drive check? TIA Duffy I have see that before, it is the PC's BIOS not being capable of accessing the entire map of the large drive (search LBA48). You either need a DOS boot CD/Floppy with a driver that can access the large drives, BIOS upgrade or an add-on card like the Promise Ultra100 TX2 that ha...

Haven't seen this one yet...haven't found it, anyway... I just got SpinRite 6 to see if could fix my hard drive, which started doing a few odd things. I made the boot diskette, no problem. But when I try to run SpinRite from the boot diskette, it gets as far as 'push any key to continue, push ESC to quit' and hangs. No pushing of any keys does a thing. I have to shut off the computer to get out of it. I'm running a Dell desktop system with XP Home Edition. And I am NOT a technician or programmer. Any ideas? Vance, I had the same problem my...

- Thank you for your reply. Spinrite 6.0 from 2006 is the latest edition. I have used it for years from the late 1990's. The home machine is from HP and Spinrite works perfectly. Steve Gibson says it should work on any machine with any operating system, and i trust him. How is it possible to reconfigure from RAID On to RAID.
